Fermyon Spin is the most developer-friendly framework for building Wasm-native serverless applications. The 4.0.1 release (June 9, 2026) adopts the manifest v3 format (v2 is now legacy), adds an opt-in WASI Preview 3 capability surface, and expands the built-in trigger set for queues, cron, and outbound webhooks. In May 2026 Akamai announced the acquisition of Fermyon, signaling a deeper integration between Spin and Akamai's edge platform. Applications are defined as a set of Wasm components wired together by a spin.toml manifest, with managed access to key-value stores, SQL databases, and outbound HTTP — all governed by the WASI capability model. The same Spin application runs locally with spin up, on Fermyon Cloud, on Kubernetes via SpinKube, or on any Wasmtime-based runtime, with no code changes.
